Parminder Nagra's Reaction to Alcatraz Premiere: "Already? You're Killing Me Off?"
Parminder Nagra Despite being shot by a sniper in the two-hour series premiere of Alcatraz, Dr. Lucy Banerjee will not mysteriously disappear from J.J. Abrams' new Fox drama - which is, of course, a relief to her portrayer, Parminder Nagra. "When I was told that was happening, I was like, 'Already? You're killing me off?'" Nagra recalls. "They went, 'No, no, no, no. This is what's happening.' It's always disconcerting when you've been shot as an actor because it's like: Are they going to survive or not?!" Dissecting Alcatraz's Mysteries: Who are the '63s? Lucy - with the help of San Francisco cop Rebecca Madsen (Sarah Jones), Alcatraz expert Diego Soto (Lost alum Jorge Garcia) and federal agent Emerson Hauser (Sam Neill) - has been tasked to hunt down a group of more than 300 guards and prisoners who seemingly vanished into thin air in 1963 from Alcatraz. The big twist? She's one of them. "You'll begin to start seeing a bit more of the backstory," Nagra says of Lucy, who was once a psychiatrist on the island and now works closely alongside Hauser. Both of them worked at Alcatraz when the '63s disappeared, but it remains to be seen whether they knew each other then - though he was especially distressed when she was shot. One thing is sure: Both are hiding a wealth of secrets. Nagra previously starred on NBC's ER, where the biggest mystery to the audience was the medical jargon. Now, she finds herself almost as much in the dark as the audience about her character and the mysteries surrounding the '63s. "It's good actually, because that's been the fun part of doing something like this because you're only given limited information, and if you are given any, it's relevant to a little bit of the story line," she says. "It really is like going with the flow in the truest sense." "Jorge was like, 'Well, this is sort of what happened on Lost," Nagra adds. "Eventually, you go, 'Well, I guess this is just what it is and you've got to go with it.' Very quickly you learn that's what you have to do." Alcatraz's J.J. Abrams: New Fox drama is on an island, but it's not Lost One of the bigger mysteries Nagra is interested in learning about is why even her own character doesn't know where the '63s were for the nearly 50 years they were missing, as evidenced by Lucy's interrogation of Jack Sylvane (Jeffrey Pierce) in the premiere. That's one mystery that won't be revealed for a long while, though. "Hopefully, in the next few more episodes we have left to film, we will get some of those things answered. I wouldn't be surprised if it was kept secret a little bit longer just to really frustrate [the viewers]," she says with a laugh. "It keeps people coming back for more." Alcatraz airs Mondays at 9/8c on Fox.

Wistful for Wisteria Lane
CherryThe cast and creator of "Desperate Housewives" talked about the professional and personal legacy that will forever be etched on Wisteria Lane at ABC's final TCA sesh Tuesday.Marc Cherry also added that despite the show's popularity, there would be neither a spinoff nor feature film.In referencing HBO's "Sex and the City," which ventured to the bigscreen following a run with a similarly very high-profile female cast, Cherry said: "The advantage for them (in doing a movie) is that they hadn't plumbed the depths of these characters, but after eight years I think we're done. I'm never sending these gals to Dubai."The panel was a nostalgia trip for Cherry, who had previously written for "The Golden Girls" but whose career had hit a major roadblock just prior to the "Housewives" launch in 2004."For a lot of us, it was our second chance," he said. "Marcia (Cross) had 'Melrose Place' and Teri (Hatcher) had 'Lois & Clark.' When it hit, it was crazy and intense, but we all said thank God."Cherry, who handed off showrunning duties to exec producer Bob Dailey several years ago and is currently working on some shows in development for the Alphabet, added: "I knew it would be a roller coaster, but I'm smart enough to know that there's no job that goes on forever. ... Like anything in life, the glory was worth the pain."Said actress Felicity Huffman in recalling the early zaniness: "I figured all press is good press. If stories were fallacious, it didn't matter."James Denton said he was a bit disappointed the show never got its kudos due but he believes the series made a lasting imprint on television."For awards we fell between the cracks, but Marc brought something to TV that we hadn't seen before," he said, Contact Stuart Levine at stuart.levine@variety.com

Watercooler: It's Absolutely Fabulous to Have Patsy and Edina Back!
Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley Sweetie darlings! After too many years away (and two years in the clink for Saffy), the British boozebags of Absolutely Fabulous returned last night to clink cheers to their 20th anniversary of La Croix and high-grade pharmaceuticals with the first of three special episodes. And it is so bloody Fabulous to have them back.Last seen in 2004, Pats and Eddy now have a whole new world of pop culture to clown on, be it the Kardashians, Twitter or the original Danish version of The Killing, which were all skewered during last night's episode, amid the patently cheeky cocktail of unfortunate fashion choices, drug references and age-denial gags we've come to expect from the Stoli-swilling Laverne & Shirley from across the pond. Which is a good thing, since the main plot - Saffy's prison BFF turned out to be the drug dealer Pats stiffed years earlier - wasn't as "insta-classic" as some past Abs. Still, it was a hoot to behold the old girls getting back into the groove of behaving badly and we can't wait to see what they will get into (couture and storyline-wise) when BBC America and Loga air the second and third specials later this year. Were you completely daft over the duo's return?Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!
